Payment Card Security on the Internet

Carefully read the Bank’s General Regulations for Transactions available on the Bank’s website or at any of its branches. Discuss any uncertainties with the Bank’s customer service specialist;
Consider the necessity to set daily/monthly spending limits on your payment card or additional card that may differ from the original limits set by the Bank (information on these limits can be found in the Bank Fees on its website);
Apply for SMS notification service (SMS bank) and stay informed. The Bank will send information about incoming and outgoing transactions in your account to your mobile phone. Regularly monitor your account statements with payment details via the Bank’s remote account management system (Privat24 online banking facility) or by requesting account statements at any of the Bank’s branches, since the period for submission of claims is limited;
To avoid the possibility of fraud with payment cards, do not send your payment card number, as well as any other information related to your finances via e-ail;
The Bank uses its remote account management system (Privat24 online banking facility) as a secure channel for ongoing communication with its customers;
Do not open messages from unknown senders. Do not respond to e-mails in which you are asked to provide personal information, including payment card data, PIN codes, etc., on behalf of the Bank. NB! The Bank will never send you an e-mail or SMS to inquire the following information: your payment card data, card expiry date, CVV2 code, payment card PIN codes, credit limits on your payment cards, and passwords for online banking. If you receive such letters, please contact the Bank by calling at toll-free phone number 8000 1515 (for 24/7 calls from Latvia) or +371 67041368 (for calls from abroad) or submitting report via the Bank’s remote account management system (Privat24 online banking facility), and verify whether the letter was sent by the Bank. Do not reveal personal information or banking details, such as payment card number, online banking codes etc., via e-mail, SMS or even phone calls;
Under no circumstances disclose your payment card PIN code to anyone.
  • Shopping on the Internet: use services of well-known and verified retailers/service providers only. Before using your payment card online, make sure that you have the possibility to contact retailer/service provider in case of any disputes or questions. Make certain that all the addresses (telephone numbers) provided on the website are correct (by format, country codes).
  • Addresses of secure web pages begin with https://, and not with http://. Thus, the letter „s” is important, as it verifies the enhanced security of the website;
  • Make sure that retailer uses data encryption systems. If encryption is used, a padlock icon will be seen at the bottom of the page.
  • Before making a purchase and entering payment card information, read the terms and conditions of purchase and returns provided by the retailer/service provider on their website. Do not make the purchase, if these terms are not understandable or acceptable to you.
  • Read the confidential/personal data storing and processing conditions provided by the retailer/service provider.
If you want to use e-services of the retailer or service provider, verify whether by making payment you will get ownership rights to the service or enter into a service subscription agreement with the service provider and from then on (once a week, month or year) will be receiving invoices for the service.
  • Avoid using services of suspicious Internet resources; frequently they are created in order to obtain payment cards’ information for unlawful use.
  • If you have doubts about authenticity of the website, e. g. prices of the selected products or services are 30–50% lower than prices on similar websites, it is better not to use their services prior to additional checking.
Install a firewall and anti-virus software on your computer/tablets/mobile devices and update it regularly, as well as update any other software that you are using (operating systems and application software); this will protect you from viruses and spyware;
For websites, e-mail services and access to online banking, use non-trivial passwords that are not related to your birth date or other personal data, names your of children or pets. If possible, use password containing both symbols and digits. Do not write passwords down or share them with anyone. If you have troubles remembering your password, create a system for writing down passwords which is understandable to you only;
If you suspect that your identification data or payment card information has become known to an unauthorized person, please contact the Bank immediately.

Ключевым аспектом при покупках в Интернете является безопасность данных платежной карты, поэтому важно знать, как защитить эту информацию и свой счет от злоумышленного использования.
